Speeding truck leaves taxi driver dead near Zirakpur’s Chhat village

In yet another hit-and-run accident in Mohali, a 37-year-old taxi driver was killed after a speeding truck hit his vehicle near Chhat light point on the Zirakpur-Patiala road in the wee hours of Monday.

The deceased, Varinder Singh, 37, hailed from Haryana. Police said he was driving from Rajpura to Zirakpur, when a rashly driven truck, coming from Dera Bassi, rammed into his car around 4 am.

The truck initially collided with the traffic lights, before ploughing into the deceased’s vehicle. He drove off leaving Singh bleeding behind.

Singh’s brother Surender, who also drives a taxi, told police that he was waiting for him at the Chhat light point, as they had to go somewhere together.

Surender rushed his brother to a private hospital, where staff referred him to GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, due to his critical condition. But he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital.

Police have registered a case under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against the unidentified truck driver at the Zirakpur police station.
